3D Sound with Dolby Atmos
Dolby Laboratories introduced Dolby Atmos, the object oriented surround sound technology, in mid 2012. This technology allows sound to be placed in a room three dimensionally (3D). Interestingly, this technology does not replace earlier versions of Dolby’s surround technology, which is channel based, but appends the 3D sound with additional “height” speakers. As with most new standards in the A/V business, it has taken some time for the product space to mature and be widely available to consumers. Now, many movies are being released with a native Dolby Atmos soundtrack and the hardware side has caught up as well with manufactures like Yamaha, Pioneer, and Speakercraft leading the way.
Dolby’s marketing tag line for Atmos is “Hear the Whole Picture”. That goes to say that with a good system setup, the object oriented surround is lush and compelling. Here are some of the benefits from Dolby:
- 3D Sound – Rather than being constrained to channels, sounds exist as individual entities that are precisely placed and moved in three-dimensional space.
- Adds an overhead dimension – A new sensation of height immerses you in the action, creating a full audio atmosphere and realistically depicting objects moving overhead.
- Produces breathtaking sound quality – Dolby Atmos renders everything from dialogue to quiet scenes to whirlwind action with astonishing clarity, richness, detail, and depth.
- Creates a powerfully moving entertainment experience – It all comes together in sound that excites your senses and inspires your emotions to deliver the full impact of entertainment.
We believe that Atmos can bring new life to old systems or bring maximum enjoyment from a new home theater or media room setup. Upgrading an existing system for Atmos can be as easy as adding additional “height” speakers in the ceiling or in the wall (via Speakercraft ATX100). Yamaha has produced Atmos receivers from the beginning, if your receiver doesn’t decode Atmos, upgrading is easy. AV Simplified Solutions is dedicated to bringing the latest technology to your home. Dolby Atmos is one of the technologies that we are excited about.
